The agency is confronting staffing shortages caused by air traffic controllers, who are working unpaid, with some calling out of work during the shutdown.

The airport said the closures will help keep the remaining checkpoints running smoothly despite shutdown-related staffing shortages.

The FAA slows down or even stops flights temporarily anytime it is short on controllers or if there is an equipment problem.

Residents in need are selected at random to get free rides on SEPTA. Some advocates say those with the greatest need should get priority.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported staffing-related delays on Friday at airports in Newark, New Jersey, Boston, Nashville, Houston and Dallas.

The transit agency has until Nov. 14 to inspect more than 100 remaining cars. Until then, commuters can expect crowded trips.
