The racist video showing teenage white girls in blackface was circulated on social media this week.

With shootings at recent highs in many American cities, some educators are reconsidering the role schools play in preventing and responding to neighborhood gun violence.

Scholars who have studied school funding litigation in dozens of states say there may be many more steps to come.

All school buildings will open with a two-hour delay “to ensure the safety of students and staff traveling to school,” School District of Philadelphia officials said.

Trauma that comes from directly or indirectly experiencing gun violence can have short- and long-term effects, especially among youth survivors.

The judge said students who live in school districts with low property values and incomes do not get the same opportunities and resources as those in high-income districts.

Police said the weapon went off after it fell to the floor and one of the combatants stepped on it. No one was injured and the gun was found on the floor.

As part of its book review process, the district is buying books so committees can read them and make recommendations.

City officials say they’ve been working to address the issue, and have been hosting training sessions for rec center staff.

Amid Philly’s ongoing gun violence crisis, educators are making changes they hope will better protect children. WHYY News reporters took a close look at some of their efforts.

Reggie McNeil, the school district’s chief operating officer, will serve as secretary of general services, responsible for state buildings and vehicles, as well as purchasing.

The revisions removed units on Black feminist literary thought and Black Lives Matter.

The board also asked the city at its biannual meeting to provide parking for teachers near some schools to address safety concerns.

While officials are conducting a second round of lead testing in schools, the state education secretary says “filter first” should be the mantra going forward.

The student, who is in stable condition, was shot three times in the arm and the thigh, according to a district spokesperson.
