Using a soda tax to fund pre-K?

Listen 00:48:44

Guests: Jim Engler and Lauren Vidas

Philadelphia’s proposed soda tax is a hot topic: even the Presidential candidates have weighed in. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s getting a lot of push back on his effort to implement the tax to fund pre-K. There are concerns that a sugary drinks tax could hurt poor and working families, and that the increased price could cause a drop in sales. In this hour of Radio Times, we’ll debate the benefits and drawbacks of a sugary tax with JIM ENGLER, the Deputy Mayor of Policy and Legislation for the city of Philadelphia and LAUREN VIDAS, an attorney who represents the Philadelphia Beverage Association and the group Philadelphians Against Higher Grocery Taxes.
