Gun seized at Newark High School in Delaware

The loaded handgun was discovered in a 16 year old student’s backpack after a teacher noticed the odor of marijuana.

The Newark High School Resource Officer stationed at the school was summoned by a teacher around 9:30 Tuesday morning. The officer found a small amount of marijuana and the loaded handgun which had been hidden inside a sneaker.

Police describe the weapon as a Ruger .380 caliber handgun. The student, who lives in Wilmington, was taken to Newark Police station where he was processed and then sent to the New Castle County Detention Center in lieu of $17,500 cash bail.

He’s facing charges including Possession Purchase Own or Control of a Firearm (Handgun) by Prohibited Juvenile, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon A Firearm, and Possession of a Weapon in a Safe School Zone.
