The wage gap; then, why we don’t talk about our paychecks at work

Listen

Guests: Lisa Maatz, Mark Perry and Stephanie Thomas

Yesterday, on National Equal Pay Day, President Obama signed two executives orders that would make it easier for workers to find out how much their colleagues earn. The orders were part of the administration’s effort to end the wage gap by helping women get the information they need to know if they are being paid fairly. Current estimates are that for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns 77 cents. In this hour of Radio Times, we’ll explore the roots of the wage gap between men and women and ask if it really exists. Our guests, with differing opinions, are LISA MAATZ of the American Association of University Women and economist MARK PERRY of the American Enterprise Institute. Then, is knowing what your colleagues earn a good thing? Economist STEPHANIE THOMAS helps us understand why we don’t talk about our salary at work.
