Is plagiarism on the rise?
ListenHour 2
Guests: Susan Blum, Kelly McBride, Alan Brown
It seems like every few months, some famous person makes the news for plagiarizing. Most recently it was Senator Rand Paul who stole from Wikipedia without attribution. Paul joins a long list of plagiarists including Oscar Wilde, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Martin Luther King Jr., Vice-President Joe Biden, Doris Kerns Goodwin, Jonah Lehrer, Fareed Zakaria, and Jane Goodall. But why is plagiarism so rampant in politics, business, the arts and academics? Has it gotten worse with the web? And should we even care? Marty talks about the plagiarism with KELLY MCBRIDE, Senior Faculty in Ethics, Reporting and Writing at the Poynter Institute and SUSAN BLUM, a cultural anthropologist at the University of Notre Dame and the author of My Word! Plagiarism and College Culture. Then, we’ll learn about accidental plagiarism, called cyptomnesia from ALAN BROWN, a psychology professor at Southern Methodist University
