Babies, language and the developing brain

Talk to your baby – it’s critical for their developing brains. And researchers now know that the choice and number of words that parents use matter. Early exposure to language helps predict kids’ academic performance in later years. It also helps explain the achievement gap between lower and higher income families. This morning we probe the baby brain and look at the important role the language plays in the first few years of life. Our guests are TRUDE HAECKER, a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and medical director of the hospital’s Reach Out and Read program, and ROBERTA GOLINKOFF, director of the Infant Language Project at the University of Delaware.
