Your guide to giving in Northwest Philly this holiday season

Here’s a round up of various holiday drives going on in the area and opportunities to give during this holiday season. 

‘Give and Get’ in Mt. Airy through Jan. 15

From Thanksgiving through Jan. 15 bring a winter coat to donate at any of the following Mt. Airy restaurants and receive a free dessert with your meal as a token of thanks.

“Our restaurants really wanted to find a way to give back this season. This promotion helps them to get coats on the backs of those who need them and helps local charities achieve their mission,” said Elizabeth Moselle, director of corridor revitalization and business development at Mt. Airy USA. 

Coats will be collected and given to Cradles to Crayons, Northwest Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network (NPIHN), Face to Face and The Salvation Army for distribution. 

State Rep. Cherelle Parker’s annual coat drive through Dec. 3

State Rep. Cherelle Parker’s office will be collecting new and gently-used coats through Dec. 3. You can drop coats off at Rep. Parker’s office (1536 E. Wadsworth Ave.) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Call (215) 242-7300 with any questions.

Coalition Against Hunger partners in Northwest Philly

Here’s a list of Coalition Against Hunger partner sites throughout the Northwest along with their specific services and needs.

Germantown SDA Church, located in E. Mt Airy at 200 E. Cliveden, runs a pantry every Thursday. 215-849-6967.
Grace Community Center, 25-29 W. Johnson St., hosts community groups, afterschool program, senior meals, clothing and food distribution including produce. 215-848-2700.
Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry, 35 W. Chelten Ave., offers a variety of social services including a weekly cupboard for NW Philadelphia residents. 215-843-2340,
Face to Face operates a soup kitchen at 109 E. Price Street. Their wish list includes clothing, toiletries, and grocery gift cards. 215-849-0179.
Masjidullah, Inc., 7700 Ogontz Ave., offers healthier pantry options such as produce, whole grains, and lean proteins, and delivers to homebound clients. They also organize a themed food and recipe collection each month. 215-424-8022.

Valley Green Bank’s annual book drive through Dec. 31

Vally Green Bank kicked off their annual book drive on Nov. 29 and will be collecting new and gently-used books through Dec. 31. Collected books will be donated to Mastery Charter Elementary School and to Philadelphia District Health Center. Call (215) 242-7540 with any questions. Here are the drop-off locations:

Lutheran Theological Seminary toy drive 

The Lutheran Theological Seminary starts its toy collection drive on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at the annual Christmas tree lighting. The Seminary is participating in the Salvation Army’s “Stockings for Kids” program and will be collecting wrapped gifts for children up to 12 years of age.

Historic Germantown holiday drive through Dec. 14

Historic Germantown will be collecting travel size, personal care items at each of its historic sites. Items to be collected include soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, disposable razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. Please call (215) 844-1683 for additional information. Pet supply drive through Jan. 9

From Dec. 9 to Jan. 9, Queenie’s Pets in Mt. Airy will be running a pet supply drive. Donations will benefit PAWS and ACCT.
