O’Scanlon calls N.J. red-light camera program a ‘mess’

A five-week suspension for issuing tickets at most of the red light camera intersections in New Jersey was lifted last week after the state determined the lights were timed properly.Republican Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon said an independent engineer he brought in has found that yellow lights at four of the six camera locations they examined do not allow enough time to get through the intersections before the lights turns red.

“The bottom line is, this program is a mess,” O’Scanlon said. “It’s been a mess from minute one, and we absolutely need to fix it or kill it. I’m ready to scrap it. But, short of that, if we’re going to keep this pilot program in place it has to be fair.”O’Scanlon said he expects bipartisan support for legislation he’ll introduce to mandate increased yellow light times at those red light camera intersections.
