Little League pitcher wants more girls to play

Mo’Ne Davis may be the first American girl heading to play in the Little League World Series in a decade. But rather than focusing on the accomplishment, the 13-year-old from Philadelphia wishes she had more company.

Davis pitched a three-hitter Sunday to lead Taney Youth Baseball Association Little League of Philadelphia to an 8-0 victory over a squad from Delaware in the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship game.

Davis, who struck out six, will become only the 18th girl to play in 68 years in the Little League World Series, which starts Thursday in Williamsport, joining Emma March of the Canada Region Champions from South Vancouver Little League, British Columbia.

Not that she thinks it should be such an unusual occurrence.

“More girls should join boys’ teams so it could be a tradition and it wouldn’t be so special,” she told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Davis struck out 10 in the team’s previous victory over Delaware-Newark National Little League in the regional.

Little League officials said it will also be only the third time that two girls will play in the same Little League championship series.

Taney scored six runs in the first three innings, with Jared Sprague-Lott hitting an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run single in the second inning.
