Councilman wants to equip Philly school buildings with solar panels

A Philadelphia city councilman is looking to the sun to power more public schools with solar.
Councilman Derek Green is calling for hearings to explore adding energy-collecting solar panels to the city schools.
He described it “as a way to reduce costs for the school district and provide an opportunity so we can save resources for the school district.
“But also looking at how solar panels can provide an opportunity to grow the economy in reference to well-paying jobs locally as well as education options for students in the school district,” Green said.
Representatives of the city school district wasn’t present for the announcement, but Council President Darrell Clarke said they will be on board.
“Anything that could limit visits to our annual budget process where they have their hands out asking for money, I fully encourage them to be part of that process,” he said.
A date for the hearing on the proposal has not be set.
