Gun rights advocates focus sights on mental illness

Listen

Last week there were two mass shootings – one at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard and another at a park on Chicago’s South Side.  But surprisingly these horrific events did little to reignite the debate over gun control.  Have we reached a “new normal” in this country as President Obama said at Sunday’s memorial service for the victims of the Navy Yard shooting?  This hour, where is the debate over stronger gun laws and what’s behind the renewed focus on mental illness and gun violence?  Guest host Tracey Matisak talks with CQ Roll Call’s Legal Affairs correspondent JOHN GRAMLICH.  Then, JEFFREY SWANSON, a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine discusses the fallacies behind linking mental illness to gun violence.
