Rejoice and Shout

Listen

Hour 2

A new documentary about the story and evolution of Gospel music, told with rare archival footage, is opening at the Ritz movie theaters in Philadelphia this Friday, June 24. “Rejoice and Shout” traces Gospel from its early spiritual and hymn roots, through a cappella quartets, picking up blues and swing, to the hybrid Soul/Hip Hop contemporary sound popular today. We’ll talk to the director DON McGLYNN about his inspiration for the film; IRA TUCKER, JR., whose father, Ira Tucker, Sr., was a 70-year member of Philadelphia’s Dixie Hummingbirds; and REVEREND MARK HATCHER, pastor of Holy Ghost Headquarters Revival Center at the Met on North Broad Street (the old Metropolitan Opera House). Tucker has produced a new Hummingbirds CD with a new lineup of singers scheduled for release this summer.
