Hour 2

Roller derby, specifically women’s flat-track roller derby, is a fun and serious sport growing in popularity, especially in U.S. cities and definitely here in Philadelphia, where the Philly Roller Girls is the local league affiliated with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. Three local home teams compete against each other in Philadelphia: the Broad Street Butchers, the Heavy Metal Hookers and the Philthy Britches. And two travel teams, the Liberty Belles and the Independence Dolls, take on teams from the more than 100 leagues around the country. These women from all walks of life skate, jam, whip and bleed for the sport they love, and today, three Philly Roller Girls join us to discuss the sport. JOCELYN JENIK aka “The Cycrone!” skates with the Heavy Metal Hookers and Independence Dolls, and is among the league’s senior members. VANESSA JACKSON, aka “EuroThrash” is a Heavy Metal Hooker and a Liberty Belle, and led the league’s public relations efforts for a few years. And we’ll be joined by ALLISON SCUTTI, aka “Cha Cha,” who when she’s not skating for the Broad Street Butchers is leading research projects into neurological disorders and teaching college biology courses.
