Men negotiating the work-life balance
ListenHour 2
The pressures that women encountered when entering the workforce in large numbers – to excel at home and at work – are now being felt more fully by men. That’s the finding of a new study of the work-life balance by the Families and Work Institute, “The New Male Mystique” (link to pdf). Fathers in two-income households report their stress levels rising from 35 percent in 1977 to 60 percent in2008, with increasing expectations for men’s involvement at home competing with lengthening workdays. The report’s lead author, KERSTIN AUMANN, joins guest-host TRACEY MATISAK and STEW FRIEDMAN (link to .doc), Practice Professor of Management and Director of the Wharton Work/Life Integration Project and author of Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life, to discuss how men are negotiating the increasingly difficult balance between work and home.
