ELLIOTT, NATHANIEL POPKINand PETER WOODALL show readers the photographs of urban life – from the Civil War through World War II. In this hour, Marty talks with the trio of authors about the multilayered history of Philadelphia and the stories behind the Wanamaker organ, faded picture of Father and Mother Divine and the now-abandoned Holmesburg Prison. Then we’ll hear about the Symphony for a Broken Orchestra, a new project in Philadelphia aimed at highlighting the underfunded city schools which cannot afford to repair their musical instruments. Temple Contemporary director ROBERT BLACKSON will tell us about the project and will bring in some of the broken instruments that will be used in the symphony.
