In 2003, DAVID PETERS was commissioned as a chaplain in the U.S. Army shortly after the invasion of Iraq. He was deployed to Iraq in 2006 as the battalion chaplain for the 62nd Engineer Combat Battalion – a unit charged with repairing roads and constructing guard towers. They frequently had to work through the night in dangerous areas of Baghdad and saw their fair share of danger. He served them by administering last rites, counseling the wounded, and simply listening to their stateside issues. In this hour of Radio Times, Marty speaks with Peters, currently an Episcopal priest and U.S. Army Reserve chaplain, about his new book Death Letter: God, Sex, and War, about his time in Iraq and the years following. He explores his changing relationship with God, the end of his marriage, and the way in which he grappled with his experiences abroad.
