Report: Rutgers administrators need to exert more control over athletics

A new report concludes that Rutgers University’s central administration should take more control of its athletic department. The recommendation is part of an independent review released this afternoon into the circumstances that allowed former head men’s basketball coach Mike Rice to abuse his players.

It was commissioned by the university after Rice was fired in April after his abusive style was revealed in a video. The scandal also let to the resignations of the university’s athletic director and top in-house lawyer.

The report conducted by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP calls for the athletic director and athletic department’s chief financial officer both to report to a university senior vice president.
