Potter’s Field burial ground commemorated

Service honors the memory of more than 600 Delawareans buried at Baylor Potter’s Field in New Castle.  The field sits between Baylor Women’s Correctional Institute and the Department of Health and Social Services.  State leaders will take part in a ceremony to commemorate an effort over the past two years to return the site to a proper state.  That renewal effort included the addition of low-maintenance plants, decorative fencing and a sign that reads, “State of Delaware, Potter’s Field, Est. 1979.”

Nearly 650 individuals were buried there including clients of the former Delaware State Hospital, now known as the Delaware Psychiatric Center.  Delawareans who do not have families, were indigent or who die while living in state facilities are buried there as well.
