Philly City Council gets an ethics watchdog

Philadelphia City Council now has a chief ethics officer.
Council President Darrell Clarke appointed an ethics watchdog to make sure Council members and their staffs have no doubt about issues of ethical concern.
“One of the things we want to make sure of is that individuals who work for City Council understand all the ethics rules and laws,” Clarke said. “That person is responsible for coordinating all meetings between the ethics board and members of Council.”
Mary McDaniel, who will continue in the role, has a good background for the position, Clarke said.
“Actually used to be a state trooper, so it’s clear she understands the law,” he said Friday. “But she’s been a welcome addition to our staff for several years. Was actually chief counsel for [Pennsylvania] Speaker of the House.”
McDaniel will make just under $90,000 a year to keep City Council on the straight and narrow.
