Philadelphia launching ad campaign to attract African-American visitors

A new effort in Philadelphia is seeking to attract more African-American tourists to the city by tapping new and conventional media.

The “We Got You” campaign is designed to showcase attractions in Philadelphia that may appeal to African-American audiences through “webisodes,” said Meryl Levitz of Visit Philadelphia. The webisodes will be distributed through social media and also will figure in conventional commercials.

“We have Tariq Trotter, also known as Black Thought, as the lead emcee,” Levitz said. “He’s, of course, the co-creator of the Grammy-award winning hip-hop band The Roots.”

Levitz said the goal is to assemble a small travelogue focusing on sites that may be unfamiliar to those outside the city.

“What we’re highlighting is Philadelphia’s culture, food, history, outdoors — which has really bloomed in these last years,” she said. “And shopping, of course.”

The webisodes also will be used in conventional commercials as part of a two-year $600,000 media advertising buy.
