No clear end in sight for legal actions over Bridgegate
After three years, two convictions and one guilty plea, the scandal known as “Bridgegate” may not even be close to a conclusion.
This month, two former allies of Republican Gov. Chris Christie were convicted in a scheme to use traffic jams near the George Washington Bridge to punish a mayor who wouldn’t endorse Christie.
They’re embarking on what could be a lengthy appeals process.
Christie wasn’t charged, but he faces a separate criminal misconduct complaint in state court.
There’s also a lawsuit ongoing in federal court filed by residents and businesses in Fort Lee, New Jersey, who say they were inconvenienced by the September 2013 gridlock.
The scandal already has marred Christie’s legacy and complicated his efforts to land a spot in the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
