Moonlight Movies To Return To Lovett Library

Mt. Airy USA (MAUSA) has announced that their second annual Moonlight Movies in Mt. Airy will be returning to Lovett Library Park Friday, June 22nd. The free summer outdoor movie series comes as a partnership between MAUSA, the Lovett Library and Trolley Car Diner.

MAUSA is once again asking neighbors to pick which movies to feature in the series this year. NewsWorks readers can get in on the fun by voting here. Voters can select up to 10 movies from a list of 50 offered and can also write in votes for three PG or PG-13 flicks they would like to see this summer.

MAUSA’s 50 movie selections are diverse, ranging from Happy Feet to the not so family-friendly movie Psycho. Many of the selections are for an older crowd, whether it be gruesome can’t-get-the-image of-that-creature-forcing-its-proboscis-down-throats sci-fi horror such as Alien or humor that will rocket over kid’s heads like that of Dr. Strangelove. The adult fare may be a nod to “date night” at drive-in. There’s definitely more room to cuddle on a picnic blanket.

Most of the offerings are in the PG range, appealing to all ages. The classic Neverending Story is sure to inspire many a hum of Limahl’s infectious tune along Germantown Avenue for weeks, as will musicals West Side Story and Singing In the Rain.

MAUSA first held the successful film series last summer to generate interest in the library’s grounds as a neighborhood public space. The organization has been working with the Community Design Collaborative (CDC) and volunteer Ari Miller to redesign Lovett Library Park. CDC finalized schematic plans for the redesign early last month, which will include a small amphitheater, reading garden, story ring and an area for nature play. MAUSA will use the plans to seek funding for the Lovett Library Project.
