Mid-Century Philly: 415-425 South Street

For today’s Mid-Century Philly, we look to the north side of South Street between 4th and 5th streets in 1949. Back then the retail mix included a Tri-Plex shoe store, the Dubrow furniture showroom, and Klinghoffer carpet on this block. In the photo below, looking northwest, you can also see the marquee for the Model Theater, which was given an Art Deco makeover in 1930. Today each of these buildings remain: the Dubrow store was Pearl Art & Craft for years (now vacant), the Model is now Bare Feet Shoes. Klinghoffer is still in business, with locations on Bainbridge and East Passyunk.
