Manayunk Brewery martini gets blood orange infusion

It’s officially spring, with summer around the corner.  In light of the good weather, we’ve asked some Northwest Philadelphia bartenders to shake things up with creative cocktail recipes you can make at home.

Do you have a favorite warm weather concoction?  Send us a recipe and let us know the story behind your special cocktail or mocktail.

The Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant, located at 4120 Main St., has created an exotic cocktail that they call a “Blood Orange Martini.” Blood orange infused vodka gives this martini a kick of sweet citrus flavor.

Infused vodka’s are a booming trend in the cocktail world.  At your local liquor store you’ll find a staggering variety of vodka flavors, from bacon to blueberry.  This recipe calls for SKYY vodka but the flavor is available from Charbay and a number of other distillers.

You can buy blood orange vodka, but it’s fun and easy to infuse your own with instructions found at Oprah.com and other sites. The Web is filled with recipes and instructions for the home mixologist. We found recipes for infusing Skittles candies, hot dogs, pickles and even scorpions – which, by the way, we do not recommend.

Ingredients:

– blood orange vodka (SKYY Infusions Blood Orange)

– triple sec

– lime juice

– orange juice

– cranberry juice

– Sprite lemon-lime soda

Instructions:

Step 1: In a shaker filled with ice, mix together three ounces of blood orange vodka, one ounce of triple sec, a half ounce of lime juice, a half ounce of orange juice, a half ounce of cranberry juice. Shake the mixture. Add a splash of Sprite and stir.

Step 3: Using a strainer, pour the mixture into a martini glass.

Step 4: Garnish with an orange (or blood orange) slice.

The bittersweet blend creates a tart flavor with an aroma of orange zest.

Drink creator and Manayunk Brewery bartender Steve Moffa says the drink is one of his favorites to make for patrons.

“It’s a refreshing cocktail for a hot summer night,” said Moffa.
