Driver of school bus with children onboard charged with DUI

Authorities have charged a man with operating a school bus loaded with children in Lakewood with driving under the influence.

Police say an officer was at Chestnut Street and Vermont Avenue at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when he radioed headquarters about a road rage incident involving two vehicles, including the school bus occupied by approximately 20 children.

Additional officers arrived and detected alcohol on the breath of Angel Colon, 54, of Toms River while speaking with the man, according to a police news release.

They additionally determined that Colon had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, police said.

In addition to DUI, Colon was also charged with endangering the children.

Police did not disclose details about the road rage incident. No one was injured.

The Asbury Park Press reported that Colon, employed by Jay’s Bus Service, was not transporting public school children.
