Dover council votes for stronger executive role for mayor
The Dover city council has voted for a stronger executive role for the mayor.
The council voted 5-2 on Monday for changes in the city’s government’s structure, endorsing a model involving the mayor in more day-to-day operations.
Under the new structure, all city departments would report to the city manager, except the clerk’s office and finance department. The manager would report to the mayor, but the position would be controlled by the council.
The mayor currently oversees economic development and police, but other departments report to the manager and council. Officials say this makes it hard to hold one person accountable.
Officials say the final structure will likely be different from what they voted on, with charter changes and new ordinances and the final form going to the General Assembly.
