New deal would mean more police on Wilmington streets
The City of Wilmington has struck a new deal with its police union, which will result in seven additional officers on patrol each hour of the day.
The new one-year contract still has to be approved by Wilmington City Council.
The extra manpower will come from restructuring platoons and shifts, not by hiring new officers. Beginning next summer, officers will work in 12-hour shifts. The redeployment will increase the number of officers on duty during each hour of the day and night by approximately seven.
The City and police union have agreed to institute the new 12-hour shifts as an 18-month pilot program, after which time, the effectiveness of the program will be reviewed.
