Delaware Blue Hens will take on Elon Phoenix in 2014

The University of Delaware Blue Hens will take on the Elon Phoenix beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Colonial Athletic Association announced on Thursday that Elon University will be the 10th fulltime member of the conference.  The school has 16 collegiate men and women’s sports and has been a member of the Southern Conference for the past decade.  One of the major reasons for the switch is the geographical location of the CAA conference, according to Dr. Leo Lambert, president of Elon University.

“56 percent of Elon’s student body hails from the colonial footprint,” said Lambert in a press conference following the announcement.  Dr. Lambert added that a large percentage of the school’s alumni also live in east coast metropolitan cities.

CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said Elon will make a “terrific partner” and will help build regional competition.  “We believe that this is a terrific intuitional fit not just athletically but also academically and other intuitional initiatives,” said CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager.
