Authorities: 1 dead, 1 injured in Egg Harbor crash

One person was killed and another was seriously injured when a car went off a southern New Jersey roadway and struck a tree on Thanksgiving Day.

Egg Harbor Township police say the crash occurred around 4:35 p.m. Thursday on Spruce Avenue. They say the driver, 62-year-old township resident Anthony Ponzio, failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

Ponzio remained hospitalized Friday in critical condition, but further details on his injuries were not disclosed.

A passenger in the car, 20-year-old Nevil Tauro of Absecon, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic was detoured for about four hours while the crash was being investigated. It did not appear that any other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
