A.C. Airport has built it…hoping international travelers will come

Atlantic City Airport is expanding with hopes to make the “international” in its name a reality.

Until now, Atlantic City International’s only non-domestic flights have been charters.

Sam Donelson Executive Director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, that oversees the facility, says with the expansion, there’s room for customs.

“Which has been designed and built in accordance with all of the codes and standards that are put out by the Customs and Boarder Protection agency,” said Donelson. “So what this will allow for is for us to expand for the international charter service but allow for scheduled international arrivals and that’s what we really are after here.”

Right now only one carrier, Spirit Airlines, serves Atlantic City. Donelson says that could change.

“We will grow, whether that’s organically thorough additional flights through Spirit Airlines or the introduction of additional airlines into the market as well,” he said. We fully expect over time that we will have additional flights with Spirit as well as additional airlines.”

The expansion cost $27 million and was paid exclusively by tolls from the Atlantic City Expressway, also run by the Transportation Authority.
