2 Republicans seek to repeal New Jersey’s gas tax hike
Two Republican lawmakers are seeking to repeal New Jersey’s gas tax increase to fund road and bridge projects that’s due to take effect on Nov. 1.
Sens. Kip Bateman and Mike Doherty introduced the measure on Thursday.
The lawmakers say people were shocked to learn the 23-cent a gallon increase could rise in the future if revenue targets are not met.
Gov. Chris Christie signed the increase last Friday, saying he had no other choices to fund the Transportation Trust Fund.
The Republican agreed to the increase in exchange for cutting the estate tax and lowering the sales tax.
Christie worked out the deal to boost the tax from 14.5 cents per gallon to 37.4 cents per gallon with Democratic Senate President Steve Sweeney and Democratic Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto.
