Unraveling the Tax Code

Listen

(Seth Perlman/AP)

Hour 1

As the debt “super committee” begins the work of finding $1.2 trillion to cut from the deficit in the next 10 years, many are hoping tax reform will be on the table.  Closing loopholes and ending subsidies will certainly be debated, but what about the possibility of a larger tax code overhaul?  Today we’ll look at the U.S. tax code and the possibility of revamping it.  How did our current system get so unwieldy?  What are some of the reform proposals?  And what are the political roadblocks standing in the way?  Marty talks with guests EUGENE STEUERLE, a fellow at the Urban Institute, and LORI MONTGOMERY, economics reporter with The Washington Post.
