Trade policy, new unemployment numbers, discouraged workers

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its latest jobs report, and as usual, the monthly survey excluded the cohort of people who have given up looking for work.  Today on Radio Times, we’ll examine the various reasons people exit the labor market, including what are known as “discouraged workers.” We’ll discuss why they aren’t included in the overall unemployment numbers and examine what the newest employment numbers indicate about joblessness in America. We’ll be joined by CARL VAN HORN, the director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, and by WILLIAM DICKENS, chair of the department of economics at Northeastern University.  But first, we’ll talk with LAWRENCE MISHEL from the Economic Policy Institute about trade policy and Donald Trump’s recent evocation of his work and research – which he subsequently rebutted.
