Temporary work: the rise of the gig economy
Listen 48:30Guest: Louis Hyman
Chances are you or someone you know is a consultant, a contractor, a freelancer, temporary worker, or part-timer juggling a few jobs to make ends meet. Increasingly, this is what work looks like today—flexible sure, but a lot less stable and without benefits for most people. Is this the new norm and is it better then what we had? Cornell labor relations professor LOUIS HYMAN says that the shift to the gig economy started before Silicon Valley and Uber, in 1950s corporations. This hour we talk with Hyman, who is the author of Temp: How American Work, American Business, and the American Dream Became Temporary.
