Rose George, on shipping, pirates and waste

Listen

Hour 1

ROSE GEORGE spent much of last summer on a huge freighter ship bound for Singapore, charting pirate-infested waters and researching the state of international shipping for her next book and the online magazine Slate. She found a shipping industry rife with abuse and exploitation of the men, mostly from the developing world, who endure a life at sea that many compare to “prison with a paycheck,” except that paycheck is often withheld or never paid at all. Her previous book examined The Big Necessity, the world of human waste, what happens to it & why it matters. Rose joins Marty in the studio today to talk about how we ship, what we flush and much more.
