Here Comes the Sun

Guest: Nicole Dennis-Benn

When most Americans visit the island of Jamaica, they get a taste of the beautiful beaches, reggae music, and delicious food.  But beyond the gates of these resorts and tourist destinations lies a country rife with complicated racial discrimination known as “colorism,” as well as extreme poverty and crime. In her debut novel, Here Comes the Sun, novelist NICOLE DENNIS-BENN explores Jamaica’s relationship with the tourist industry through the lens of a protagonist who is also navigating her homosexuality.  She joins guest host Mary Cummings-Jordan this hour to discuss her book and her upbringing in Jamaica.
