February 20, 2012 [Originally broadcast on 8/29/2011] — Author Patricia A. Nugent never intended her journal about caregiving for her terminally ill parents to become a book. Her entries about “caring for” and “saying goodbye” as seen through the eyes of a daughter, are really about a journey so many of us must take. One day, we are daughter or son; the next, we are nurturer and advocate; then ultimately, griever. Looking back, many view the experience as a blessing and feel fortunate to have spent time being there for their loved ones.
Dr. Dan Gottlieb explores stories of caring for and saying good bye with Patricia A. Nugent author of They Live On: Saying Goodbye to Mom and Dad. Guests also include Louis Colbert, the Director of the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging. His experiences caring for his dying mother with the help of his siblings are touched on in an article he wrote for Aging Today.They’re also chronicled in Gaily Sheehy’s book Passages in Caregiving: Turning Chaos into Confidence.
