Listen

Guests: James Serpell and Katherine Grier

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show starts this weekend. Handlers will lead their dogs around the ring competing for the title “Best in Show.” There will be 2,700 dogs from 192 breeds this year vying for the blue ribbon. And since last year, mutts have been allowed in, at least into the agility competition. This hour, we’ll look at the history of dog shows, the growing concerns of overbreeding, and explore our the human bond with our canine companions. Marty talks with JAMES SERPELL, Director of the Center for the Interaction of Animals & Society at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine and KATHERINE GRIER, professor in the department of history at the University of Delaware.
