Weavers Way to update members on store renovation Sunday

Weavers Way Co-op plans to update its members of this summer’s plans to renovate its Mt. Airy store prior to its Spring General Membership meeting this Sunday. 

Members will meet at the 7165 Lounge on Germantown Avenue (formally North by Northwest) from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m. Weavers Way managers will discuss the upcoming renovation of its 559 Carpenter Lane store. The changes are so extensive that the co-op grocery store could be closed from mid-July to early September. 

Under the plan, an expanded bulk goods section will move to the second floor. The health and beauty section that currently resides upstairs will move across the street, into an additional storefront that will be combined with the Co-op’s pet supply store.

Jonathan McGoran, director of communications, said while some items may be a little further, the staff will be more accessible for the customers.

During the time the Mt. Airy store is closed, McGoran says transportation will be provided to the Chestnut Hill store but the co-op also plans to maintain a business presence in Mt. Airy.

“Weavers Way will be open for business at Greene St. and Carpenter Lane throughout the summer. In addition to a major outdoor produce market open every day, the co-op will also operate a pop-up grocery store, selling staples and other popular grocery items from every department from the first floor of 555 Carpenter Lane,” said McGoran.

“We are going to have events and live music to ensure a lot is going on at the intersection in part because we are committed to community and neighborhood, but also to help support other business that kind of depend on the foot traffic that we generate,” said McGoran.

 

Other business

During the meeting, new board member will be elected and role of the committees such as the new Chicken Committee will be discussed. 

The featured speaker will be Don Hinkle-Brown, CEO and president of The Reinvestment Fund. His presentation will focus on the initiatives and policies that promote access to healthy food and discuss the work that the Fund has done with other cooperatives in the area. Hinkle-Brown is scheduled to speak at 6:30 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided by Geechee Girl Cafe and The Night Kitchen will provide cake. There will also be live entertainment.
