Weavers Way hopes for Sept 7 soft-opening for its Mt. Airy store
The Mt. Airy Weavers Way grocery store is expected to re-open Friday, Sept 7. But Weavers Way spokesman Jon McGoran says even this date could change.
The store is being renovated and McGoran says crews are nearly done. During the construction period Weavers Way is operating a mini-store at 555 Carpenter Lane.
The $500,000 renovation left the store, located at 559 Carpenter Lane, temporarily closed starting July 13. Weavers Way had previously announced that construction work would be done by today. But McGoran says construction workers will work through the weekend. McGoran says he does not view this as a delay because Weavers Way has never announced a hard opening date.
“We had been aiming at the first week of September and we had been thinking the 4th [of September],” he said. “Now it’s looking like the 7th.” The food cooperative isn’t officially advertising that it they’ll be open at that time, McGoran said, so they can sort out any kinks that arise from the new equipment. Weavers Way is planning a grand re-opening on September 29.
To date, McGoran says, the renovations completed include having the sub-floor in place, the electrical system installed, a refinished and painted second floor, some shelving put into place and various refrigeration units in place.
New lighting, the floor and plugging in equipment are still on the to-do list, he said.
(Revised: Changes made to reflect that Weavers Way had not previously stated an opening date)
