University of Delaware sets higher tuition rates
The cost of getting an education at the University of Delaware is going up by about 7-percent.
UD announced Tuesday the new tuition rate structure for in-state students of $9,670. Out-of-state tuition will be $25,940.
“Although there is much financial pressure nationally on higher education institutions, we recognize our responsibility to remain affordable for in-state residents and continue to allocate a portion of our resources into more aid for Delawareans,” University of Delaware President Patrick Harker said. “We are also focused on ensuring that our academic student services and research offerings meet the needs of all students while maintaining a balanced operating budget.”
UD cites the increasing costs of maintaining facilities as well as health and property insurance as one factor behind the increase. About 43 percent of the increase is also needed to cover the costs of rising demand for financial aid.
The increase in student fees would go toward funding capital improvements and construction of new student recreational and athletic facilities. Other fee increases support student health services, fitness and recreational programs, concerts and other events. Room and board fees are also going up to reflect higher costs.
