After a 34-year-old woman was shot in the face at Germantown’s Vernon Park, a series of residents and community groups to came forward to double down on anti-loitering efforts at the park. NewsWorks writers and editors visited the park at different times over the course of two weeks to see what the scene was really like. Here’s what we found. 

3 Springside Chestnut Hill Academy students gear up for Little League World Series

After celebrating an 8-0 win over Delaware-Newark National Little League on Sunday in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship game, the Taney Dragons of Center City headed to Williamsport on Monday to gear up for the Little League World Series. The team includes three students from Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, including star pitcher and only one of two females left in the tournament, Mo’ne Davis. 

MLK High conflict-resolution staff hits the streets seeking facetime with incoming freshmen

The conflict-resolution staff at West Oak Lane’s Martin Luther King High School has targeted about 100 incoming freshmen who have been identified as “problem students” or at-risk for summertime home visits. The visits are meant to discuss expectations and set them up for success once the year starts. Read more about the effort here. 

Plans for 9-mile trail through Wissahickon hits stumbling block over section of Germantown Avenue

The Friends of the Cresheim Trail have big plans for a 9-mile trail that will connect parts of Northwest Philadelphia to the suburbs, allowing bikers, runners and walkers to move easily through the Wissahickon and between communities. The plan has hit a roadblock regarding an unused trestle that runs over Germantown Avenue between Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill. Read more here. 

Mt. Airy’s Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange serving up classic country food with a twist

When the much-beloved Wine Thief on Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy closed, many community members were disapointed. In its place, Marvin Graaf of East Falls Taproom, opened a classic country eatery that he dubbed Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange.
