Top 4 stories to watch in NW Philly

Here’s a look at what’s to come this week:

1. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the face of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was one of the most prominent Jewish theologians of his time. On Friday and Saturday, members of the region’s “interfaith and social justice communities” gathered at Mishkan Shalom synagogue to honor both men by discussing social change. 2. More and more female entrepreneurs are opening up shops on Main Street in Manayunk. Some started their ventures out of a need for a job, while others left jobs to branch out on their own. 3. Nearly a year after he announced his candidacy, Stephen Kinsey is finally a state representative. The 53-year-old was sworn into office in Harrisburg on Tuesday and will lead the 201st Legislative District. On Saturday night, Kinsey will be inaugurated again, this time by the community. The celebration will be held at Treasures in Germantown.

4. The Roxborough Development Corporation and the Preservation Alliance will host a meeting next Thursday night to talk about the future of Lyceum Avenue. The RDC recently secured a $30,000 grant from the Preservation Alliance to help renovate homes on the historic block. Ideas for specific improvements will be discussed.
