Restarting process to fill vacancy on Wilmington City Council

Based on advice from the City Solicitor, the president of Wilmington City Council will reconvene an ad hoc selection committee to go about filling the vacant 3rd district council seat.

The seat has been vacant since early November, when former Council member Stephanie T. Boulden stepped down following her election to the State House of Representatives.  The committee interviewed five candidates, but the one candidate who was recommended, Darius Brown, failed to receive the support of council at its meeting December 10th.

Council President Norman Griffiths says based on guidance from City Solicitor John Sheridan, the committee will reconvene to again interview applicants and make a recommendation to the full council for consideration.  Griffiths chairs the committee, which includes council members Ernest “Trippi” Congo, Charles “Bud” Freel, Paul Ignudo and Hanifa Shabazz.

The deadline for letters of interest and resumes to be received from any interested parties, including past applicants, is January 7th, 2011.  Members of council who wish to make recommendations must also do so by January 7th.  The city charter states that the new member must come from the 3rd district and be a member of the same political party as the past council member.  Boulden is a Democrat.
