Summer construction season is in full swing around Philadelphia, and PennDOT is about to dive in.
PennDOT announced Wednesday evening that will start repairing and resurfacing 22 miles of Philadelphia interstate highways. In an announcement Wednesday evening, the state highway authority said that the project, which will cost $13.4 million, will begin Monday, July 6th.
Work will start with the resurfacing of Kelly Drive between Hunting Park Avenue and Ridge Avenue; Walnut Lane between Ridge Avenue and Cliveden Street/Johnson Circle; and Midvale Avenue between Ridge Avenue and Wissahickon Avenue.
Once work is completed on those three roads, PennDOT will turn to the following:
- Island Avenue between Bartram Avenue and Pennrose Avenue/Glenmore Avenue;
- Synder Avenue between Vare Avenue and Christopher Columbus Boulevard;
- Christopher Columbus Boulevard between Race Street and Spring Garden Street;
- Arch Street between Front Street and Broad Street (Route 611);
- 33rd Street between 34th Street and Market Street;
- Crescentville Road/Adams Avenue between Cheltenham Avenue and Rising Sun Avenue;
- Frankford Avenue between Rhawn Street and the Bucks County line; and
- 52nd Street between Whitby Street and Parkside Avenue.
While the entire resurfacing project is expected to finish sometime in October, work on each street should take about two weeks, as this Streetsplainer explicates in detail. First, each street will be milled, meaning the top layer of asphalt is removed. Then, all of the street’s utility covers, or manholes, must be inspected before new asphalt can be poured. Curb ramps will also be replaced as part of the resurfacing.
PennDOT’s repavement project compliments work by Philadelphia’s Streets Department, which has been ongoing over the last two weeks. PennDOT is responsible for maintaining 493 of Philadelphia’s 2,851 miles of street pavement, including Broad Street, Spring Garden Street, Snyder Avenue, and West Passyunk Avenue.
