Penn Street Trail taking shape

In February construction began on the Penn Street Trail, an important segment of the growing trail system along the Delaware River Waterfront, and the project has been cruising along this spring. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation expects to officially open this trail section in early June.

So far the separated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians along Delaware Avenue and Penn Street are coming into view, as are the outlines of rain gardens which will buffer the new trail from auto traffic and absorb stormwater.

In the next month or so, expect to see a new pocket park emerge at Penn Street and Delaware Avenue, plantings pop up in the rain gardens, and the installation of new solar-powered lights.

The Penn Street Trail will create a link between the forthcoming Spring Garden Connector (and who knows, maybe even a Spring Garden Street Greenway some day) to the south, and a trail segment built through SugarHouse’s property to its north. Later this year SugarHouse will be able to build a section of trail through its parking lot which will connect the Penn Street Trail to the waterfront trail in front of the casino. That project is waiting on a combined sewer outflow pipe to be moved.
