Penn State says College of Engineering hit in cyberattacks
Penn State University says it was the victim of a cyberattack in which hackers stole usernames and passwords issued by its College of Engineering.
Penn State said Friday the FBI notified it of the attack last November. The school says it has spent the last several months investigating the breech and taking steps to prevent a recurrence.
It says the probe revealed two separate attacks, one of them launched from China.
Penn State is notifying 18,000 people whose Social Security numbers or other personal information were stored on the targeted computers. Penn State says there’s no evidence any of that information was stolen in the attacks.
The College of Engineering’s computer network has been temporarily disconnected from the Internet while engineers upgrade the system. The outage is expected to last several days.
