Pa. House votes to limit release of officers’ names in shootings

Pennsylvania state representatives are giving their approval to a bill preventing officials from identifying police officers while they’re being investigated for discharging their weapons or using force.

The House voted 162 to 38 on Tuesday for the proposal that would also mandate release of the officer’s name if he or she is charged with a crime.

If they aren’t charged, officials can identify them unless doing so is expected to create a risk of harm to the officer or their family.

Opponents say the bill could foster distrust between police and the people they serve. Supporters argue the speed of modern communications makes it a sensible step to increase officers’ safety.

The bill is headed to the state Senate for its consideration.
