NJ changing certification requirements for teachers
New Jersey’s state education board has changed requirements for teachers to be certified to include a full year of student teaching and going through a state evaluation system.
The state education board adopted the changes Wednesday, and education officials said they will make sure that teachers are properly prepared for the classroom.
Education Commissioner David Hespe says that recent statewide test results were a “call to action” to increase teacher preparedness.
Among the changes are requiring teacher candidates to be exposed to multiple types of classrooms, including at least one with students with disabilities. Teachers will also have to complete a performance assessment to earn their certification.
The new PARCC test given for the first time last spring found that less than half of New Jersey’s public high school juniors are ready for college.
